Socio-economic impact of covid-19 in the Republic of North Macedonia

DURATION: August – December 2020

DONOR: Westminster Foundation for Democracy

The purpose of this project is to support and work with the staff of the parliamentary budget office in preparation of an analysis of the economic and social impact of CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) in the Republic of North Macedonia. The first part of the analysis provides information on the movement of the basic macroeconomic indicators in the Republic of North Macedonia before and during the crisis caused by COVID-19, compared to the world economic crisis in 2009. In addition, the analysis measures the impact of the crises on the most affected sectors, as well as the effect of the economic measures to support companies adopted by the Government. The analysis should also take into account the impact of COVID-19 on different planning regions, as well as the impact on the labor market (by gender, age groups, education level, ethnicity, etc.). Finally, the analysis provides an overview of 3 possible scenarios (optimistic, realistic and pessimistic) for the basic macroeconomic indicators and the perspectives for their future movement.

Through this activity, the staff members of the parliamentary budget office should build their capacities, which are needed in the future to prepare financial analyzes and calculations for draft policies, as well as cost-benefit analyzes of bills proposed by MPs.
