Improving the financial transparency of political parties in the Republic of North Macedonia

DURATION: July 2021 – April 2022
DONOR: International Republican Institute (IRI)

This project started in September 2021. During the project, two policy memoranda were developed, Good Practices for the Presentation of Financial Data of Parties and Candidates and Financial Transparency of Candidates for Federal Elections in the USA.

The purpose of the brief, good practices for the presentation of financial data of parties and candidates, is to raise the awareness of political parties, civil society and the public about the need for active financial transparency of political parties, whose financial data should be available, reliable, timely and in an appropriate format so that they can be easily used. In the brief, the parties from the Republic of North Macedonia and the bodies for financial supervision are pointed out to the existing good practices and advanced standards for the presentation of the financial data of the parties from other countries that can also be applied in our country.

In the brief on financial transparency of the candidates for the federal elections in the USA, he analyzes the financial transparency of the candidates in the elections in the United States of America and indicates the best practices that could be applied in the Republic of North Macedonia. The financial transparency of the candidates in the federal elections in the USA (presidential, for members of the Senate and for members of the Congress) is an example that should be emulated by political parties and individual candidates in all elections in Macedonia. The data that is published about the financing of parties and candidates in the USA is comprehensive, accessible, understandable and, above all, it is in an easily digestible format.

During 2022, three animated videos were released on Financial Transparency of Political Parties in North Macedonia, Financial Transparency of Candidates for Elections in the United States at the Federal Level, and Good Practices for Presentation of Financial Data.

The project is supported by the International Republic Institute (IRI).
